This study aimed to determine if high-load (HL) versus low-load with blood flow restriction (LL-BFR) resistance training programs caused different patterns of hypertrophy among hamstring muscles and the semitendinosus tendon over 9 weeks.

Key Points

Methods

  • 45 recreationally active participants were randomly assigned to HL, LL-BFR, or control groups

  • HL and LL-BFR groups performed 27 training sessions over 9 weeks

  • Exercises included stiff-leg deadlifts, front squats, seated leg curls, and leg extensions

  • Muscle and tendon volumes were measured using 3D ultrasound before and after the training period

Results

  • Semitendinosus (ST) muscle volume increased more in HL (26.5%) compared to control

  • Semimembranosus (SM) muscle volume increased more in LL-BFR (21.6%) compared to control

  • No significant changes were found in biceps femoris long head volume

  • No significant changes were observed in ST tendon volume for either training group
